Styling for Timeless Photos
When you’re planning a photography session — whether it’s a family shoot, couples session, or engagement photos — what you wear is just as important as the location and the light. As a Gladstone family photographer who also works with couples and soon-to-be newlyweds, I’ve seen how the right outfits turn beautiful images into heirloom-worthy memories.
Colours That Photograph Beautifully
The colours you choose set the emotional tone for your photos. Earthy neutrals, soft pastels, and muted shades work best against Gladstone’s beaches, paddocks, and bushland. Cream, olive, dusty pink, rust, and soft blue create warmth and connection. Busy logos or neon tones can distract the eye and date your gallery. Don’t Go Too Matchy-Matchy
Perfectly matching outfits can look flat and staged. Instead, aim for coordinated without copying. Choose two to three base colours and weave them through everyone’s outfits. For example, mum in a soft beige dress, dad in khaki chinos and a white shirt, kids in oatmeal and muted stripes — or couples pairing cream linen with sage green or deep navy with warm neutrals.
The Hat Rule — What Works & What Doesn’t
One small styling detail that makes a huge difference? Hats. Many men reach for their everyday caps or sports hats (looking at you, favourite footy team cap 👀). While comfortable, these tend to look casual and can quickly date your photos. Instead, consider something more timeless — like a felt or wool fedora, a wide-brimmed hat, or a neutral-toned beanie if it’s cool. For couples, a beautiful hat can add personality and style without pulling attention away from your faces.
Invest in Feeling Your Best
When you feel confident, it shows. Consider getting your hair done or booking a makeup artist (I recommend this often in my Style Guide). It’s not about changing who you are — it’s about feeling polished and camera-ready. For couples, this is especially helpful before engagement sessions; for families, it can take the stress out of prep day.
Little Ones & Natural Comfort
For babies and kids, simple and comfortable outfits always win. Think knitted rompers, neutral onesies, floaty little dresses, or rolled linen shorts. Avoid loud cartoons or graphics; they can steal the spotlight. Keeping their outfits timeless means your gallery won’t feel “dated” as they grow.
